The Heartbeat of Mother Earth: Reclaiming Women Drummers

When I went to ALisa Starkweather’s Daughter of the Earth events several years back, the women drummers made one of the biggest impressions on me.  It was the first thing I heard.  Drumming. Accompanied by a keening and loud … I want to say crying but it was more like yowling. ‘What have I gotten myself into?’ I thought.

Preparation.  I later found out.

Ritual and ceremony leaving behind the pain and hurt of this daily world.

Working it out.  Letting it go.  So that you could land mindfully and present in the weekend.

And the women drummers were the heartbeat.

The heartbeat of Mother Earth.

For many of the divinely feminine events that I have attended over the years, there was at least one drummer who would provide this heartbeat.

It called women in.  It grounded us.  It raised energy.

Kristen Arant the Drum Lady was one of the main women drummers at the Daughters of the Earth event.  We have stayed in touch over the years.  Here is a video from her about using the drum as a portal to open up women’s hearts.

Besides her freaking amazing talent, she just always looks like she’s having so much damn fun drumming.  This video was from thirteen years ago.   Like many of us, Kristen is a Way Shower.

She is starting a 5 week online Zoom class this Tuesday, April 23rd through May 21st, 2024.  You can sign up on her Drum Lady website The Drum Lady

When the Drummers Were Women
A Spiritual History of Rhythm by Layne Redmond
For millennia, the sacred drummers of pre-Christian Mediterranean and western Asia were women. In this inspiring book, Layne Redmond, herself a renowned drummer, tells their history. [The] drummer-priestesses held the keys to experience of the divine through rhythm. They were at the center of the goddess worship of matriarchal societies until the ascendance of patriarchal cultures and the loss of drumming as a spiritual technology.  With wisdom and passion, Redmond chronicles our species’ deep connection to the drum, our rich heritage of inseparable spirituality and music, and the modern-day women reclaiming it.”
