A Guest Post by Kristen Arant the Drum Lady
Friends
I want to talk a little about the joy and release of catharsis, and especially what it means for women, and marginalized gender groups.
I hope you don’t find it cliche for me to say that we are (all of us, really) taught to bottle up raw emotions. I am talking here about the kind of emotions that lead to wailing, screaming, roaring, and beating on things (thank goodness for drums).
These raw emotions have incredible power when released. The release of them changes us by letting our brains know that it’s okay to let go. We transform the toxicity of holding in and building resentment, to letting go and aligning with our inner power, our bravery. When we walk in the world this way, it let’s others know they can do it, too.
Honestly, it can sometimes be scary to let these raw emotions come out.
Letting them out takes courage.
And a safe space, free from judgment. Free from shame.
For some of us there is an extra something we need…
which is to be in a space with just those who have shared an essential part of our experience. As women and AFABs, we share a commonality, an experience.
In order to reach down deep, lift our voices in unison, wail as loud as we can, and beat on drums with all our might, we need a container. Women have needed these containers since the beginning of time. And now, they are few and far between.
Lyrics:
Cry if you need to cry
Go on and cry
Cry if you need to cry
Go on and cry (let your tears fly)
Cuz if you’re feelin blue, sometimes it’s the way through
So cry if you need to cry
Go on and cry
Shout if you need to shout
Go on and shout (hey-yay!!)
Shout if you need to shout
Go on and shout, go on and shout
It may be loud for some, but you’ll feel better when you’re done
So
Shout if you need to shout
Go on and shout
Sing if you need to sing
Go on and sing
Sing if you need to sing
Go on and sing (let your voice ring)
Cuz if you sing with all your might
You give your spirit wings to fly
So
Sing if you need to sing
Go on and sing
Drum if you need to drum
Go on and drum
Drum if you need to drum
Go on and drum. Go on and drum
Cuz if the world’s gone dark
Your rhythm is the fire to spark your heart
So
Drum if you need to drum
Go on and drum
Much Love
