I call them Asantewaa Drums after Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Mother of the Ejisu in the Ashanti Empire. In 1900, she led the Ashanti war also known as the War of the Golden Stool, or the Yaa Asantewaa War of Independence, against the British Empire.
A powerful woman indeed.
These djembe drums carry her namesake because they were built in Ghana and help support a community of artists there. And also because of all the women and girls who become owners of these drums, which help them to find their own voices, build self esteem, process grief and frustration, and come into community with one another.
These djembes are lightweight. 10-15lb each, most of them. They are made that way on purpose, for ease of carriage.
I’ll be showcasing them in my Rhythm Room in Takoma Park this weekend. Reach out through my website to make an appointment. Happy to ship as well.
Classes are coming soon – get your drum and begin the journey.
Love,
The Drumlady
