Baubo is a Greek goddess known for embodying belly laughter—the kind provoked by indecent gestures and suggestive jokes. Her name literally means “belly.” Baubo is often depicted as a headless and limbless body, with her genitals forming a bearded mouth and her breasts staring like eyes. She is considered the sister or double of Iambe, the goddess of indecent speech.
A well-known myth involving Baubo tells how she encountered the grieving goddess Demeter, who was searching for her lost daughter Persephone. When Demeter refused comfort, Baubo lifted her skirts and exposed herself salaciously. This unexpected act made Demeter laugh for the first time in months, symbolizing the return of joy and the coming of spring. This story is seen as a metaphor for the seasonal cycle and the deep bond between mothers and daughters.
