Femme, Tranquil Shared Home Looking for One More

INTENTIONAL LIVING HOUSE OPPORTUNITY on Whidbey Island, Washington ~

We are a femme, tranquil shared house on South Whidbey with a one-person room available. This room is on the second floor, which includes a shared common area and bathroom. We are 4 folks in our 20s & 30s. We’re a quiet, direct communicating, conflict-repair focused, laughing, emoting, peace-making bunch focused on our home being a sanctuary for our lives. In addition to our day jobs, we enjoy cooking, gardening, reading and other creative and healing pursuits. The house is located on a large property near Clinton with forest, garden, fruit trees, trails and a lot of awesome wildlife – deer, the occasional beaver or otter, owls, raptors, coyotes and many songbirds. 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, shared common spaces. Cell service can be patchy, so we have a landline as well as internet for Wi-Fi calling. No dogs or indoor only cats, other pets may be negotiated on a case by case basis due to allergies in the house. We heat with propane and a wood stove. Roommates often use a portable heater in their separate rooms to have more temperature control.

This is not a party house. Some folks may have a relaxed drink or two at night, but if you like to get intoxicated regularly, we are not a good fit. No smoking of any kind is allowed inside the house.  Rent is $512/mo (not including utilities) with a $512 deposit and minimum 6 month commitment. Rent includes a shared garage that serves as an art studio that has storage space designated for each roomie. Utilities run about $100/mo depending on the season and there will be shared costs for toilet paper, firewood, food, etc.

House culture & expectations:

  • No smoking of any kind inside the house (outside is ok).
  • Once in a while we may have a house concert or dinner gathering, but this is not a party house.
  • We keep our home space private and usually only have our partners, close friends or family around. Otherwise the house is a sanctuary for rest and recharge. If you are going to invite someone to stay over we request that you send an email well in advance if possible.
  • Monthly house meetings (2 hrs expected to be held for this each month) and weekly shared chores (approx 1 hr of housekeeping & cleaning)
  • We prefer to keep a very clean home, especially common spaces like kitchen & bathrooms. We value cleaning up after ourselves in a timely way. Some of us work outdoors and lots of us craft and cook. So, the house is well-lived in, AND we are looking for someone who will help keep common spaces available and clean for the next person to use.
  • Our kitchen is welcoming and inclusive of different dietary choices, but would not work for someone seeking a vegan-only house or uncomfortable sharing space with people who may not have the same eating habits.
  • We often end up hanging out around meal times and evenings.  It can also be very quiet at times.  During the summer we work and/or travel, so we can be scattered. The colder months bring us inside together more around the wood stove or the living room crafting/working/hanging out.

Other FYI:

Our house is:

  • a queer/trans inclusive space
  • has multiple people of the global majority living here
  • has disabled, neurodivergent folks
  • is generally emotionally grounded, direct communicators and open to constant attunement and collaboration to keep our household in sync and feeling safe

We are artists, healers, educators and cultural workers that encourage musicians to join. We have a piano that you are welcome to play, subject to quiet hours and general house needs between 10pm – 9am Sun-Fri.

The internet access on our part of the island is limited, so it can be hard to be on video calls/perform other internet tasks that require a quick upload speed if other people are also using the internet. Don’t be afraid to communicate about your schedule and needs. At least one of us is typically working from home, and on Zoom calls, so that may interfere with your ability to do video calls/fast uploading during the day.

Many of us are in healing professions and value having a quiet and peaceful space to unwind and integrate. We are zero tolerance for unnecessary drama outside of surviving late-stage capitalism and do require housemates to have a general sense of respect for calm, emotional containment and care which is maintained through written and signed shared agreements.

The lease is a 6 month minimum but preferred to have longer

If you are considering moving out, please give us as much advance notice as possible. A minimum of 45 days notice is required in order for the full security deposit to be refunded. If only 30 days notice is given and we are unable to find a new housemate to fill the room in time, the security deposit may be forfeit to cover lost rent.

If this sounds like something for you please email us responding to these prompts. Please make sure you respond to all questions below. If you do not respond to all of the questions, we will not be able to move forward in the interview process with you. We will email you back with an update within 72 hours of whether or not we would like to move forward and schedule an interview with you. We appreciate your interest and thoughtfulness in this process!

Thanks for reading this all! If this sounds like it would be a good fit, here are the next steps to take!

If we are interested we will request a zoom interview with you and the house or we will offer gratitude for your inquiry and inform you we won’t be moving forward.

If we want to move forward after your zoom interview, we will invite you for a home + land visit at your earliest convenience.

If we want to move forward with a 90 day move-in trial (to ensure we are all a good fit!), we will request 2 references and share the house agreements with you.
