Flidais is a complex Celtic Goddess with many differing stories and aspects. She is known as both an Earth Mother and the Lady of the Forest. Flidais represents the balance between our domestic and wild natures, making her an appropriate goddess to invoke on days of balance.
Key aspects of Flidais include:
- Motherhood and Cultivation: She is the mother of Irish cultivator heroes such as Arden and Bé Téite, as well as the “she-farmers” Bé Chuille and Dinand. Through her, they gained the power to cultivate and work the earth for their community.
- Protector of Nature: Modern Celtic pagans consider her a woodland goddess who protects wild fauna and flora. In mythology, she is connected to both wild and domestic animals, especially deer and cattle, which are her sacred animals. She is said to milk both, and she refers to all wild animals as “her cattle.”
- Abundance and Nurturing: Flidais is strongly associated with milk and milking, symbolizing abundance. During the Cattle Raid of Cooley (Táin Bó Cúailnge), her magical herd of cattle supplied milk for an entire army every seven days. In another story, one of her cows could feed 300 men from just one milking.
- Shape-shifting and Sensuality: She is a shape-shifter and a goddess of sexuality. Flidais claims the right to give her powers of nurturing, abundance, and sensuality to whomever she chooses. She is also known for her sexual artistry, as only she could fully satisfy her lover, Fergus mac Rog.
- Healing and Transformation: Flidais is also seen as a healing goddess. Through her role as a shape-shifter, she helps people shift the shape of their lives, opening their eyes to new possibilities, abundance, and creativity.
- Mythological Connections: She was married to Ailill Finn but was infatuated with Fergus mac Rog. She promised to give her herd of deer and cattle to Fergus if he would take her from her husband, and she kept her word.
- Divine Lineage: Flidais is part of the Tuatha Dé Danaan, the pre-Christian deities of Ireland. In some stories, she is the mother of Fand, the Celtic Sea Goddess.
Flidais embodies nurturing, abundance, sensuality, and the deep connection between humans and the natural world. She is a powerful symbol of empowerment, creativity, and the sacredness of the earth.
