Friday the 13th and the Goddess

Goddess Wisdom by Tanishka

From a goddess perspective, Friday the 13th is a day deeply rooted in ancient feminine wisdom and sacred traditions. Before the Roman Empire outlawed these traditions, Friday the 13th was considered a sacred day dedicated to the goddess of love—known as Freya in Norse mythology and Venus in Roman tradition. The name “Friday” itself comes from Freya, the Norse goddess of love, and in languages like Spanish (viernes) and French (vendredi), the day is named after Venus.

The number 13 holds special significance because there are 13 lunar cycles in a solar year, which also aligns with the average number of menstrual cycles a woman experiences annually. This made 13 a symbol of women’s power and the lunar, feminine mysteries. On Friday the 13th, people would traditionally take the day off work to stay home and celebrate love, honoring the goddess through acts of love and connection.

The negative associations with Friday the 13th in modern times—such as being considered unlucky or even evil—are seen as a result of patriarchal suppression of feminine power and wisdom. The day was originally a powerful celebration of the goddess, the moon, and the cycles of women, making it a day to reclaim and honor feminine strength and wisdom.

Tanishka the Moon Woman ‘Take the day off. Stay home and make love.’

“In today’s special Friday, the 13th episode I speak about the masks we wear to try and appear perfect or find the perfect partner. Masks that sabotage love. I also identify the conditioning that results in us being either love avoidant or love addictive…” Tanishka
