Mother Well Gathering:  A Non-Structured Retreat

By Caryn MacGrandle

I started on this path a dozen years ago when I hit rock bottom in my life.  Through a mother’s group, I found women’s circles.  And through women’s circles, I found the Goddess.

She tapped me on the shoulder and very long story short, I saw the need for a ‘directory’ to bring us together, and I created the divine feminine app a decade ago.

It now has almost 12,000 registered women from all over the world.

I have grown, expanded, found myself and made deep friendships that I never could have imagined.  I am so very GrateFull.

What a magical melding of myth & merriness, mystery & magnificence, mistressry & miracles gathers here! The DF App is our torch and song, our matrix, call, and catalyst.- Annie Finch

I’ve learned to listen to myself, my intuition and the divine within me.

And She’s telling me it’s time to Gather.

Not just on Zoom but Physically.

I started this journey in Saint Charles, Illinois where I hosted women’s circles starting in a shed in my pine-filled backyard affectionately called ‘the Moon Lodge’.

Four years later, we were meeting at Healing Arts Metaphysical Center in Batavia (I highly recommend Rodrigo) and then during Covid, we’d meet outside.

By the time I left Illinois, there were about 6-8 of us bringing our gifts to Circle.  I barely planned anything: just arranged time and space.

Magic happened. Themes emerged.  We laughed.  We cried.  We found beauty and each other.

Most of these women are still hosting Circles of their own.

Jai ma.

Over the years, I have gone to so many events, gatherings and retreats.  All of them magikal in their own rite.  All of them opportunities for growth.

More and more I see and agree  that now is not the time of Guru.

Now is the time to rely on the divinity within yourself.

And I’ve seen this time and time again.

That we are all aware of our own answers.

We just need to carve out space to get quiet and listen.

And that space is even more powerful when shared.

The Gathering

I have ten acres of land near Turtletown, Tennessee the border of Tennessee and North Carolina (it actually has a physical address of Murphy, North Carolina but is a 45 minute drive from Murphy.)

It is a long story how I found this Land and the lessons that She has already taught me.

She is an amazing blend of Wild and Civilized.

The intention that I am planting:

6-10 of us.  Bring your partner as mine will be there.  He will be at the closing circle the beginning of the weekend, the opening circle at the end, perhaps some of the others along the way.  He will definitely be drumming.  I hope he has another male to do a men’s circle or gathering.  But they might be fishing.  I know this for sure that we cannot leave our men behind.  They need the new Partnership world as desperately as we do.  But make no mistake, these will be Women’s Circles and a Women’s weekend.

It will either be camping or you can stay at the Mallard hotel 13 miles away.  We will have nightly fire/ceremony but they will end early, definitely by 10pm.  No alcohol or drugs.

It will be ‘litely’ organized, and you will be asked to participate.  Each of you will be asked to host a Circle or event (forest walk, tree hugging, music, crafting) as well as be responsible for one meal.  This container will be curated by us.  And to that end, we will meet online and get to know each other beforehand.

YOU

Have been doing this work at least several years. You host circles or run an organization.

Have written a book or two on the Sacred Feminine or otherwise studied this concept of Mother God.

Have made friends with your demons and done your work.  You’re not finished because we never are but you regularly stare in the mirror and assess.

You’re honest, authentic, able to make and keep relationships, communicate, be compassionate, empathetic.  Listen to others.

You can keep your mouth shut.  (So much needless chit chat in this world.)  Just sitting in silence with others is such a powerful act.

You have a sense of humor, a sense of joie de’vivre.  You enjoy your own company and don’t need to be entertained.  You understand that in the end, YOU are the one responsible for the experience you have.

You allow others.

You have a deep sense of knowing that All is as it Should Be, that all the craziness and chaos found in the world has its purpose and you are joyful to be doing your part.

As for the event:

Make no mistake this land is Wild. And you will need to think through things. This is not just a pull up to a 5 star hotel experience.

But no 4WD required to get there.  There’s Wifi.  A propane grill.  A well-kept private road with a half a dozen cars that travel down it daily.  Neighbors who are sometimes a pain in the ass.  Othertimes, helpful.

The weather may suck, and if it does, you will feel that.  There is one structure on the land:  a small hut affectionately and aptly named Baba Yaga hut.

It is dark out there.  No street lights.  Old growth forest.  100 plus foot trees.  A Bog.

Mama don’t play around.  But she also always provides what you need.

This experience is not for everyone.

And that is okay.

If it’s calling, reach out.

Who knows we may even get to see the Blue Ghost Fireflies.

Blue Ghosts inhabit the hidden edge of our natural water world and remind us there’s still a mystery and wonder out there. We just need to get out there sometimes and find it. -Robert Osborne
