“Kali Ma, also known as the Dark Mother, is a Hindu goddess who is considered one of the most terrifying and powerful goddesses. She is the consort of Shiva and is known as the destroyer of the world. According to the Devi Mahatmya, Kali was born from the anger of Durga, the Hindu Mother Goddess, during a battle with the demon Raktabija (“Blood-Seed”). Every time a drop of Raktabija’s blood touched the ground, a new demon would emerge, overwhelming Durga. In her anger, Durga created Kali, who is depicted as ferocious, knife-wielding, and terrifying. Kali then defeated Raktabija and his demon-blood offspring.
Kali’s iconography is both formidable and contradictory. She is described as the force that disrupts a corrupt society, destroys ignorance and sin, and opens the path for new beginnings, blessing those who seek knowledge. Kali is seen as the mother who gives life—the Creator—and then takes it away—the Annihilator. She rules over both birth and death, embodying the cycle of creation and destruction.”
